The Race to Turin after Q1-2021 - Four Italians with opportunities
The season is no longer that young. Anyone who hopes for a place at the ATP finals in Turin should rather increase in the coming week.

Do we want to commit ourselves now that the 2,130 points that Daniil Medvedev has earned so far this season would be enough for a starting place at the ATP final in Turin? Which of course also applies to Novak Djokovic , who has ten points more than Medvedev. Since it cannot be assumed that Djokovic and Medvedev will not win a single match by the end of October, the two can be scheduled as fixed starters for Turin after the end of the first quarter of 2021.
Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas left great opportunities in Miami to do even more for their points account. But should also be on the safe side. With Hubert Hurkacz and Aslan Karatsev, two other players are four-digit. How much meaningfulness does this table have?
Well: In Q2 significantly more points will be paid out: In Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome 1,000 each for the winner, in Roland Garros 2,000. According to conservative estimates, Rafael Nadal will get at least 3,000 of them. Which he urgently needs to qualify for the finals. Nadal holds 360 points (28th place). And maybe he would like to win the season-end tournament at least once in his career. In Barcelona, the matador could also take 500 points.
Thiem misses opportunities
Dominic Thiem, however, skipped the first 1,500 possible points with his renunciation of Monte Carlo and Barcelona, a successful start in Belgrade, if it comes about, would only bring 250 valuation units. In Madrid there could be something like need, Thiem has usually found his way around the high altitude so far. Not so much against it in Rome. 275 points are so far a meager result for the Austrian number one.
And the hosts? At the moment we have a man in the starting field with Jannik Sinner in seventh place. It is regrettable that Matteo Berrettini (position 14) had to take a break after his strong start to the season due to an injury. This week he is at least serving in doubles again, in Cagliari alongside brother Jacopo. Fabio Fognini, currently in 18th place, should have another dream run like in Monte Carlo 2019. And then deliver a few more treats. The Italians should perhaps trust Lorenzo Musetti, currently in 24th place, but he also has a second home game option with the #NextGen finals in Milan.
