French Open final, US Open final, ATP Finals final. From Casper Ruud 's point of view, the tennis year 2022 is something to be proud of. Although the Norwegian didn't win a major title in the end, he finally established himself among the world's best this season. It's no coincidence that the 23-year-old hibernates as number three in the world.
Ruud continued to develop his game in 2022, especially on fast underground and is now not as dependent on his forehand as he used to be. Toni Nadal didn't miss that either. "When he came to the academy, he had a bad backhand because I think he had bad footwork," Rafael Nadal's uncle and former coach recalled in an interview with Eurosport of the Scandinavian's early days at his nephew's academy. "Now his backhand is pretty good."
Ruud misses number one in New York
Ruud has improved continuously in recent years, according to Toni Nadal. For this reason, the Norwegian was only one win away from number one in September, with Carlos Alcaraz taking the top spot after his triumph at the US Open.
But what was not, can still be. At least that's what Toni Nadal thinks. "I've seen a lot of his games and he's a very good player. He can be number one," said the Spaniard.
