Pegula surprised with a win over world number one Iga Swiatek, who was also not to be expected at altitude - 6: 2, 6: 2 was the score after only 72 minutes for the world number three. Pegula had lost all four encounters with Swiatek in the previous year.
But Swiatek got off to a false start straight away, with the forehand in particular fluttering badly. Pegula, on the other hand, played great.
With the lead behind him, Frances Tiafoe took the second point, beating Kacper Zuk 6-3, 6-3 to put the USA close to reaching the final. The remaining three games (two singles, one mixed) will be played on Saturday.
Today: Greece vs Italy
In the night session on Friday, the first two singles of the second semi-final between Greece and Italy are still scheduled. Maria Sakkari starts against Martina Trevisan, then Michael Pervolarkis meets Lorenzo Musetti.
