During the US Open it was a big guess: How fit is Novak Djokovic? After the world number one had already been treated on the left shoulder in the early rounds, he had to pull the emergency brake against Stan Wawrinka in the round of 16: After the first two sets were gone, Djokovic gave up.
He had previously mysteriously talked about an injury that he had been dealing with for a long time, but did not want to go into details. In the first rounds of Flushing Meadows and after a few treatments on the court, it was finally clear that the left shoulder was causing problems - after Djokovic still had problems on the right arm in Cincinnati.
As the Spanish newspaper Marca reported, Djokovic was most recently looking for solutions in Switzerland - in the same clinic where he had his malad elbow operated on in early 2018. Djokovic returned to the tour quite quickly at the time and had made a terrific comeback with the victories in Wimbledon and at the US Open.
What exactly he has had done in Switzerland is still unclear. That an operation was due again seems unlikely, especially if the Djoker sent a message via Twitter.
Djokovic return already in Tokyo?
"Sorry for letting you dance in the dark for the past few days," Djokovic wrote on Thursday. "I have a wonderful time with my family and am actively working on my recovery so that I am fit for the Asia swing again. My health is my top priority and as soon as I am ready I will be back."
Djokovic is currently still registered for the ATP tournament in Tokyo, which starts on September 30th. Then he wants to start at the Masters tournament in Shanghai.
Whether this is really realistic will probably become clear in the coming days.
