Only a few fans witnessed one of the best scenes of the first match day on Court 7: Alejandro Tabilo served his third match point in the direction of Laslo Djere, the Serb's ball grew longer and longer. And rated "out" by the linesman. Djere and Tabilo hugged each other at the net, but the supposed loser brought up a safety challenge. The result: a hair of the ball had touched the baseline. The point had to be repeated - with the same result: Tabilo advanced to the second round with a 13:11 in the match tie-break of the third set.

And does not get a single point for the ATP world rankings. But that was just as little detrimental to the Chilean's effort as it was to his opponent. Hubert Hurkacz and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina also played their entry fee to the end, the same applies to Carlos Alcaraz and Jan-Lennard Struff. Points or not: When professional tennis players step onto the court, they want to win the respective match. There is still a decent salary.

Marterer could actually use the points

Even before the tournament, Angelique Kerber, Oscar Otte and Maximilian Marterer had emphasized that the loss of the world rankings was not important to them. Especially in the case of the two German men, it's a pity: With good results, Otte could knock on the top 20, Marterer would save himself qualifying hurdles for future events with an improvement in the world rankings. The left-hander has already made it in round two.

But it shouldn't be this year, the exclusion of the Russian and Belarusian athletes made sure of that. Daniel Vallverdu, member of the ATP Council, explained why in an interview with tennisnet: There should be a fair ranking at the end of the year. What Stan Wawrinka's coach also said: Wimbledon is and remains the biggest tournament in the tennis circuit. Monday's five-set dramas underlined this.
