Is Nick Kyrgios really up to something bigger at Wimbledon? Possibly, and the performance of Stefanos Tsitsipas makes you want more - at least in terms of tennis. Because the Australian was convincing across the board.
But of course it was partly about tennis again. After Tsitsipas shot a ball into the audience after losing the second set, Kyrgios demanded disqualification. The supervisor should please come to the square, preferably several, "I want everyone there," he called out. And explained that he himself had long since been sent off. The tournament, according to Kyrgios, can be prepared for a lot after his press conference.
Tsitsipas, meanwhile, had other problems because Kyrgios had apparently not properly transported his towel to his part of the shelf. "What color am I? The gentleman here has half of it under siege," grumbled the Greek.
Tsitsipas then caught a point deduction when he hit a serve from below from Kyrgios full can on Kyrgios and hit the gang - fortunately not the ball kids and line judges standing underneath and next to it. Tsitsipas also aimed at Kyrgios several times afterwards. Meanwhile, Kyrgios celebrated his own net roller stop to win a point with a bow. "That's why the game isn't taking place on Center Court," said John McEnroe on US TV.
There was also a brief scary scene at the beginning of the fourth set when Kyrgios slipped and fell down, apparently having injured his right groin area. However, he was able to continue playing, Kyrgios now took on his box (or someone close by) extensively. But he kept his nerve, turned 0:40 to equalize at 3:4, the short time-out when the roof was closed went without incident.
Nick Kyrgios nerves of steel at the end
The end of the match was unbelievable: When Tsitsipas set ball, Kyrgios played serve-and-volley and dug up two balls splendidly, he got the second point after a courageous forehand with a clear backhand into the empty field. And on the second match point he risked a stop - successfully. How important the victory was for Kyrgios was seen afterwards, because Kyrgios cheered energetically.
"It was an amazing match," said Kyrgios - he didn't want to overestimate what happened with Tsitsipas. Tennis is a difficult sport emotionally, "I love it," he said of Tsitsipas. "I'm so glad I got through. It was a great atmosphere."
Kyrgios meets Brandon Nakashima in the round of 16.
