The 19-year-old beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 6: 3 and 6: 4 in the WTA 250 tournament and started the new season with a win.

Fernandez was virtually inviolable, especially when serving on his own, and did not allow Alexandrova to have a break chance. In return, she used two of her eight options to do the service for the Russian woman.

Fernandez meets the winner of the game between Iga Swiatek and Daria Saville (formerly Gavrilova) in round 2.

Also next are Ajla Tomljanovic, Elena Rybakina, Maria Sakkari and Kaja Juvan.
