Anastasija Sevastova is again plagued by serious shoulder problems: The Latvian, who is coached by the Austrian coach Ronald Schmidt, had to struggle with similar problems in 2013. At that time, she even had to declare her career prematurely over, only to return to the WTA tour two years later. Sevastova lost in the first round to Magda Linette from Poland in two sets at the Australian Open.
Currently in 64th place in the WTA ranking, the Baltin was even eleventh in the women's ranking in 2018. The 31-year-old has won four individual titles so far in her career, and whether there will be more will largely depend on how her physical problems develop.
"Cannot predict how it will develop"
In an interview with the Latvian TV program "Morning Panorama", Sevastova commented on the current situation: "I had good preparation in December, but then came the first tournament, the first match with the old pain, with the old injury. I can not show my best tennis when I'm playing with pain that weighs on me."
The semi-finalist of the US Open 2018 now has to review the situation: "I'm going to take a longer break. I don't know how long it will be, but hopefully everything will clear up. I can't predict how it will develop. When "If you're not 100 per cent ready, you have no business being on the pitch. It's a tough decision, but sport isn't everything in life."
