Ashleigh Barty likes to while away the free time on the golf course, for example

It came as a complete surprise to many not quite half a year ago: At the age of only 26, Ashleigh Barty, the world number one at the time, announced to the public after her phenomenal home success at the Australian Open that she was retiring from her active tennis career. Arriving at the summit, the 3-time Grand Slam Champion decided to live a completely different life, which she obviously found great fun in.

"I have no regrets about retiring, not once have I done so," the lady from Ipswich, Queensland, tells her fans via the British daily newspaper "The Guardian". "I knew it was the right time for me. It was what I wanted to do." Meanwhile, "Ash" diversifies her free time playing golf, opening an elite academy, and publishing several children's books.

"I don't need to see other people do it"

Tennis only plays a minor role: "I didn't see the Wimbledon final this year. Of course it was great how Nick (Kyrgios, note), who I've known for a dozen years, made it to the final, but I've probably watched as many games since I retired as I've watched my entire career - that means little to none.Occasionally I'll have one running in the background, but it's very rare that I sit down and watch one watch the game with interest from start to finish."

And who can blame her? "I've hit enough tennis balls over the net in my life that I don't need to see other people do it." Absolutely understandable - the author of these lines would not want to watch an editor writing an article in his retirement...
