Still the left knee: Bianca Andreescu has to postpone her 2020 start. After the missed start to the year in Australia, the Canadian had also canceled the current tournament in Dubai, and now announced a retreat for Doha in the coming week .
Andreescu suffered her knee injury at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen last October.
The cancellation for Doha is another setback for the reigning US Open winner . Above all, it also seems questionable whether Andreescu can compete in Indian Wells. The Premier Mandatory tournament begins on March 12 in the California desert. And here it was in 2019 where Andreescu really drew attention: Andreescu started the tournament as number 60 in the world, played to the title - among other things after victories against Garbine Muguruza (6: 0, 6: 1!), Elina Svitolina and in the final in a memorable match against Angelique Kerber.
Andreescu was also injured in Miami, but continued in the summer in Toronto and at the US Open where she left off in Indian Wells and won her first Grand Slam title in Flushing Meadows after a final win over Serena Williams.
Andreescu rises in the ranking despite a break from competition
Crazy: Although she hasn't played a match in 2020, Andreescu will rise to fourth place in the WTA world ranking next week - and thus occupy her highest world ranking position so far. The reason? The current world ranking fourth, Belinda Bencic , had won the current tournament in Dubai in the previous year, but has already left there. She loses points accordingly - and Andreescu benefits. Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina are two other players who were placed in front of Andreescu during the year.
Andreescu will be placed higher than any Canadian before her. So far, Genie Bouchard and Andreescu had achieved the highest position with 5th place. Andreescu has 1,000 points to defend in Indian Wells.
