Belinda Bencic has had to endure comparisons with Martina Hingis since she celebrated her first successes on the WTA tour. And the first Swiss Miss set the bar extremely high. Bencic will certainly be happy to note that, like Hingis, she is now the winner of the traditional WTA tournament in Charleston. Especially since the Tokyo 2021 Olympic champion was able to win an event on sand for the first time.
Bencic defeated Ons Jabeur 6: 1, 5: 7 and 6: 4 in a thrilling final after a playing time of 2:36 hours and thus finally brought himself back onto the map in women's tennis. The start of the 2022 season was not quite to the liking of the Swiss. How much this title meant to Belinda Bencic was shown when she fell on her knees after winning the match point.
On their way to the final, Bencic had also defeated Paula Badosa, one of the best players of the current season. In the semifinals Bencic then won against Ekaterina Alexandrova. But Ons Jabeur can also be satisfied with the tournament in Charleston. Especially since she hasn't had many successes this season either.
