WTA Charleston: Jabeur stops defending champion Bencic in the final

Ons Jabeur won the WTA Tour 500 tournament in Charleston. The Tunisian defeated defending champion Belinda Bencic 7: 6 (6) and 6: 4 and thus took revenge for the defeat in the final last year.

Bencic started the day in Houston by continuing her game against Jessica Pegula. At a score of 7:5, 6:6 and 2:4. What could have been a strenuous start turned out to be a clear thing: Bencic only gave up one point and won the second set 7:5 in the tie-break.

And against Ons Jabeur, things initially looked good for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic champion. But Bencic couldn't bring a break advantage to the finish line and lost the first round 6: 7 (6).

In the second act, Jabeur quickly led with two breaks and 4-1. Bencic came up again, but despite chances in the very last game, he couldn't turn the tide. A year ago, the Swiss had beaten Jabeur in the final.

For Ons Jabeur it was the fourth singles title in her career. Last year she won the championships in Madrid on sand and in Berlin on grass.
