But there was nothing to gain for Victoria Azarenka either: The Belarusian suffered a sensitive 0: 6, 2: 6 defeat against the British Emma Raducanu at the WTA Tour 1000 event in Cincinnati. The two opponents only spent 61 minutes on the center court of the Lindner Family Tennis Center. While Azarenka's rather mixed 2022 season doesn't really get a boost, the 2021 US Open champion will meet local hero Jessica Pegula in the round of 16, who defeated Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in three sets.
Ons Jabeur just barely missed the end. The Tunisian, who was ranked fifth, had a surprisingly difficult time against the American doubles specialist Catherine McNally and only won after 2:23 hours in the tie-break of the third round with 6: 3, 4: 6, 7: 6 (7).
The fan of Czech women's tennis has a laughing and crying eye on his face today: Petra Kvitova defeated the Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6: 2, 6: 3 and is now playing against the already mentioned Ons Jabeur. On the other hand, Karolina Pliskova failed again early in the tournament - she lost 6:7 (3), 3:6 to Belgian Elise Mertens, who was up against French Caroline Garcia in the round of 16.
