Great success for Caroline Garcia : The Frenchwoman secured the title at the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati and gained plenty of self-confidence ahead of the US Open, which begins on August 29. In the final, the 28-year-old defeated Petra Kvitova 6-2 and 6-4.
Garcia, who fought her way through qualifying in Cincinnati, made a dream start and quickly took a 4-0 lead. Despite a gradually improving Kvitova, she didn't let that lead be taken away.
Garcia is doing her thing
After Garcia managed an early break in the second set as well, Kvitova took a medical time out for a left leg injury. The former fourth in the world rankings didn't let that bother them and used their first match point after an hour and 42 minutes to make it 6-2 and 6-4.
Garcia was thus able to celebrate the tenth title of her career and will improve from position 35 to 17th in the world rankings. Kvitova, on the other hand, missed her 30th tournament win and, despite a strong week in Cincinnati, ultimately had to settle for the final she reached.
