Daria Kasatkina has a new coach at her side in Flavio Cippola

Daria Kasatkina had a very strong 2022 season with the semi-finals in Roland Garros and the two WTA Tour tournament victories in San Jose (WTA 500) and Granby (250) and has consistently performed well in the Grand- Slam tournaments on the top line of their to-do list. Then came the sobering 1: 6, 1: 6 first round loss at the Australian Open against the world number 97. Varvara Garcheva.

The 25-year-old Russian has now made a good job of parting ways with her Spanish coach Carlos Martinez-Comet to continue working with Italy's Flavio Cipolla, nine years her junior. The Roman ended his active tennis career just over four years ago, which had brought him to 70th place in the world rankings.

"It's a complicated situation"

Kasatkina is hoping for fresh impetus from the fresh liaison, even though she is aware that a new collaboration needs a certain amount of time to get used to: "It was difficult to end such a long working relationship. It's normal to be a little afraid of making certain changes , especially if these happen during the current season. It's a complicated situation for me and my new coach, Flavo doesn't know yet what to say, when to say it and what not to say."

In a vlog on YouTube, the six-time WTA Tour champion admits frankly that the performance at the Australian Open was a cruel damper on motivation: "If you don't achieve what you want, you're disappointed and you need a few Days to recover. It's normal, almost like a breakup. It takes a little time to love the things you do again."
