No sense of achievement for Belinda Bencic in Doha

That's the crux of the matter in tournaments that start on a Sunday like the WTA Tour 1000 event in Doha: A week without a game threatens, even though you're actually represented in the tableau. Belinda Bencic, for example, had to retire from the individual race on Sunday. The Swiss lost against the Danish super talent Clara Tauson 4: 6, 6: 3 and 3: 6. Bencic is still denied a great success this year: in Sydney and St. Petersburg she reached the quarterfinals, but at the Australian Open it was already over in round two. Certainly not enough compared to the demands of the former top ten player.

Sofia Kenin , who is trying to get back on track after a long injury lay-off, was also defeated at the start in Doha. Kenin, who celebrated her greatest triumph at the beginning of 2020 by winning the Australian Open and also reached the final of the French Open in the autumn of the same year, lost to her compatriot Ann Li in three sets.

Kerber and Petkovic against Swiss women

Things went better for Jessica Pegula. The American, who failed at the Australian Open 2022 in the semifinals against Ashleigh Barty, had no problems beating Katerina Siniakova 6: 3 and 6: 2.

In the first 1000 tournament of the year on the WTA tour, Aryna Sabalenka leads the seed list in the absence of Barty. Two German players are represented in the main draw: Angelique Kerber starts against the strong Swiss player Jil Teichmann, Andrea Petkovic is also dealing with a Swiss player in Victoria Golubic.
