Admittedly, Iga Swiatek started her semifinals at the WTA Tour 500 tournament in Doha against Veronika Kudermetova reasonably well rested. Belinda Bencic had withdrawn the day before, Swiatek made it through to the semi-finals without a fight. And only stayed there for 56 minutes on the Center Court in Doha in the 6-0 and 6-1 against Kudermetova. This means that Swiatek is in a final for the first time this season.
There she gets to deal with a player against whom she had to accept a sensitive defeat at the United Cup: Jessica Pegula. The American, second in Doha behind Swaitek, had to go through three sets against Maria Sakkari and won 6-2, 4-6 and 6-1.
For Swiatek, who started her impressive winning streak in Doha last year, tomorrow is about her twelfth tournament win in singles on the WTA Tour. Jessica Pegula has won two individual championships so far: in autumn 2022 in Guadalajara. And 2019 in Washington.
