Aryna Sabalenka presented in Fort Worth early on Friday, the two-set win against Jessica Pegula was the basic prerequisite for the Belarusian having a chance at all of a place in the semifinals of the WTA Finals. Then, however, Maria Sakkari also had to play. And the Greek woman was actually so free.
Sakkari, who slipped into the eight best of the year at the last minute, also won her third group game against Ons Jabeur 6-2, 6-3. Jabeur could only have intercepted Sabalenka with a two-set win. After round one, Aryna Sabalenka, who was sentenced to watch, was able to breathe a sigh of relief.
It is now clear that Sabalenka has to face Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. The Polish world number one still has her third group game against Cori Gauff ahead of her today, but can no longer be pushed from the top of her four-man combo. Sakkari's opponent will be determined in a direct duel between Caroline Garcia and Daria Kasatkina.
