The Canadian, back on the match court a few weeks after a long injury break, beat Kayla Day 7: 5, 6: 3 and celebrated her first victory in a Masters tournament since 2017. At that time Bouchard had against Maria Sharapova and Angelique in Madrid Kerber won.

Since then, the Wimbledon finalist from 2014 has had to struggle with injuries, most recently she had surgery on her shoulder. But Bouchard seems to be in good form, two weeks ago in Ostrava he lost a set to top 15 player Belinda Bencic.

In the WTA ranking, the 28-year-old is currently ranked 430th, with her opening victory in Guadalajara she made up almost 100 places.

Today she meets Jelena Ostapenko in her two-round match.

Battle for the WTA Finals

Maria Sakkari, Carolina Garcia and Daria Kasatkina also celebrated a successful start, thus scoring important points in the fight for places in the WTA Finals; Bianca Andreescu, meanwhile, was successful against Petra Kvitova.

In action today is top seed Paula Badosa against Victoria Azarenka, as is Bencic against Sloane Stephens.
