The final in Guadalajara, where the WTA season finale was held last year, lasted just 70 minutes. So it was fitting that both finalists had already booked their tickets for this year's final event in Fort Worth. Jessica Pegula already, Maria Sakkari won an internal final against Veronika Kudermetova in Guadalajara. At the last match of the WTA Tour 1000 tournament, which had just slipped into the calendar, the Greek had no assignment. Pegula won 6-3 and 6-2, securing her first title in the 1000 category.

Pegula holds 41 singles match wins (she also qualified for Fort Worth in doubles with Cori Gauff) this season, putting her third behind Iga Swiatek (62) and Ons Jabeur (46). And should go into the WTA Finals as one of the favorites. Of course, Swiatek is at the top.

Pegula beats four major winners

Pegula, whose father owns the Buffalo Bills (NFL) and Bufallo Sabers (NHL), dedicated the victory in Guadalajara to her mother, who watched the match on TV at home. The way to the title was via Pegula's well-known strengths, as she found out herself after the win: she didn't make any stupid mistakes, made good decisions, adapted to different game situations. That was enough against Sakkari, who had to finish their semi-final against Marie Bouzkova earlier on Sunday.

Notable: On her way to the championship, Jessica Pegula defeated four women who have already won at least one Grand Slam tournament: Victoria Azarenka, Elena Rybakina, Sloane Stephens and Bianca Andreescu.
