Pera's victory came as quite a surprise in Hamburg , among other things after the match successes over last year's winner Elena-Gabriela Ruse and in the final over Anett Kontaveit, second in the world rankings.

The 27-year-old dedicated her title to her ex-coach Kristijan Schneider, who died of cancer this spring at the age of just 41. "I was one of the lucky ones who was coached by him. And I want to dedicate this trophy to him and his memory,"Pera said .

Schneider had also previously coached Borna Coric, Ana Konjuh and Olga Danilovic.

Bernarda Pera with second tournament victory in two weeks

Pera herself won her second WTA title in Hamburg, and her second in two weeks - she had previously triumphed in Budapest.

She also joins a special group of players, as the WTA statistics company OptaAce brought to light: After Monica Seles, Jennifer Capriati as well as Serena and Venus Williams, Pera is only the fifth American in this century to have two (or more) won clay court tournaments in one season.

In the WTA ranking, of course, she is also rising: Pera makes up 27 places and is now in 54th place - higher than ever!
