Former Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber is in the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Indian Wells. With a 6: 2, 1: 6, 6: 4 success against the Russian Darja Kassatkina, the 33-year-old number 15 in the world rankings made it into the top 16 for the fourth time in a row in the California desert. Kerber's next opponent is either the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic or the Slovenian Tamara Zidansek.
After a first-round bye and her subsequent three-set success in the second round against the Czech Katerina Siniakova, there were initially many signs for Kerber that she would be an effortless success. The German number one pulled away to 3-0 after an early break, held their lead and took the service to win the set a second time from their nine-year-old competitor.

After that, however, Kerber, who had made it to the final in the last edition of the elite tournament before the corona pandemic, fell completely out of step. Kassatkina, on the other hand, came into play better and better and after three breaks ensured the set was tied.
In the decision-making round, Kerber, who had lost the last duel with number 30 in Toronto two years ago, set the course for victory after a two-sided break festival with an intermediate sprint from 2: 3 to 5: 3. After 109 minutes Kerber converted her first match point to the fifth success in the ninth comparison with Kassatkina. At the same time as Angelique Kerber, Anna Kalinskaja also made it into the round of 16. The Russian fought a similarly curious fight with Viktorija Golubic, in the end Kalinskaja had the better end for himself in three sets.
