Great success for Iga Swiatek : The 20-year-old secured her fifth career title at the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells. In the final of the desert classic, the Pole prevailed against Maria Sakkari 6:4 and 6:1.
Swiatek started anything but well, she had to give up her serve in the first game. A veritable break festival quickly developed in the first set on the well-attended Center Court, which Swiatek brought to a successful conclusion after around 50 minutes.
Swiatek carried the momentum into the second round and quickly pulled away from her opponent. After 80 minutes of play, the 2020 French Open winner converted her first match point to a 6: 4 and 6: 1 success.
Thanks to the tournament victory in Indian Wells, Swiatek will take second place in the world rankings for the first time on Monday. Final opponent Sakkari can also look forward to a new personal best with third place.
