Iga Swiatek put on a splendid opening performance at the big WTA Tour 1000 event in Indian Wells: The Pole won a one-sided second round match against the American Claire Liu 6:0, 6:1 without any problems. The next much tougher touchstone is Canada's Bianca Andreescu, who had to fight far more in the 4:6,-6:4,6-3 win against wildcard player Peyton Stearns (also USA).
After a disappointing knockout round at the Australian Open, the world number one had recently shown clear improvement in form at the two tournaments in Doha (tournament win) and Dubai (final). Speaking of Australia: The finalist of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, is also in the third round, the tenth in the world rankings beat Sofia Kenin from the USA 7: 6 (6), 7: 6 (5 ).
Also Raducanu and Garcia continue
And once again "Down Under" - because that's where Ons Jabeur had her last appearance on the women's tour in the second round. After that, the Tunisian had to undergo a minor surgery that took her out of the world ranking points race until she reached the Sunshine Double. Now the North African has successfully entered the women's circus again and defeated Magdalena Frech from Poland 4:6, 6:4, 6:1 after slight initial difficulties.
Also one round ahead is Emma Raducanu, who bid farewell to Frech's 20th-ranked compatriot, Magda Linette, 7:6 (3), 6:2. France's Caroline Garcia was as combative as usual. The fifth in the world rankings defeated the Hungarian Dalma Galfi after 2:07 hours 6: 1, 6: 7 (4) and 6: 4.
Here the single tableau from Indian Wells.
