After this year's Australian Open, Ons Jabeur spoke of a "small surgery" that she had to undergo. At the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the North African lost in three sets in the second round against the Czech Marketa Vondrousova. After that, the 28-year-old withdrew from the women's goal in order to initiate the aforementioned intervention.
Many details about Jabeur's injury were not known, but now on her comeback at the big combined event in Indian Wells she spoke a little more openly about the injury, which has required the Tunisian's full attention for the past two months. Despite the three-set win in the second round against Magda Frech from Poland, Jabeur doesn't think he's fully at the height of his creativity.
Injury still somewhat mysterious
"The knee is getting better - I would say it's at 80 percent, but I'm getting closer and closer to 100 percent. At least the pain isn't there anymore. I'm getting stronger and slowly getting my natural movements back," said the Wimbledon and Last year's US Open finalist.
Was it maybe too soon to get back on tour in California's Tennis Paradise? "It was a difficult decision and I was the one who insisted on coming to Indian Wells and Miami. It was probably too soon but I made it a new challenge for me. After the first set I regretted it (laughs) , but then I thought, I have to accept what's happening, fight and see how it goes."
However, there is still no complete clarity as to the physical problems of the current fourth in the world rankings. When asked, Jabeur said: "I still need some time. But when the time is right, I will let you know what really happened. I'm sorry, I can't talk about it now."
