Angelique Kerber will not start at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. That became known on Monday evening. As tennisnet.com learned, the German is currently struggling with a cold. However, your start at the event in Rome, which begins on May 9th, should not be in jeopardy.
The illness is the next setback for Kerber in an already mixed season. At the beginning of the season, she - also plagued by the aftermath of a corona infection - lost in round one of the Australian Open, overall the three-time Grand Slam winner is holding on the current season with only two wins.
Most recently, Kerber lost to Anett Kontaveit in round one at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. The Estonian canceled her start in Madrid, as did world number three Barbora Krejcikova.
