Actually, all four participants in the doubles final came to Madrid with high individual ambitions for the WTA Tour 1000 tournament. All of which were then disappointed. It went furthest for Jessica Pegula, who lost to Veronika Kudermetova in the quarterfinals. Victoria Azarenka lost in her first match to the American Alicia Parks, as did her partner Betariz Haddad Maia, who was defeated by the then 15-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva. Cori Gauff was knocked out in round three against Paula Badosa.

In the doubles final, Azarenka/Haddad Maia got off to a dream start. And were not disturbed by a break deficit in round two. For Azarenka it was the tenth title in doubles, the last one to date was in 2021 with Aryna Sabalenka in Berlin. Beatriz Haddad Maia has written for the fifth time as a doubles winner of a WTA tournament.
