Successful working day for the German tennis ladies at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid! After Angelique Kerber had made it to the second round in the morning, qualifier Laura Siegemund followed suit a few hours later. The 33-year-old finally defeated Kateryna Kozlova 6: 4 and 6: 2 in both sets despite the break residue.
In the second round, Siegemund is now waiting for another caliber with Iga Swiatek. The reigning French Open winner gave Alison Rikse no chance at all in the 6: 1 and 6: 1 successes and was already in excellent shape in her first clay court match of the current season.
Svitolina awards six match points
Ashleigh Barty was almost as impressive in their first round encounter. The world number one defeated Shelby Rogers 6: 2 and 6: 1. She could face Swiatek in the last sixteen in a match between the last two French Open winners.

While two of the favorites to win the tournament jumped their entry hurdles without any problems, Elina Svitolina, number four of the event, said goodbye. The Ukrainian, who had reached the semi-finals in Stuttgart last week, gave the Swiss woman a 5: 1 lead and six match points in the third set and ultimately lost 6: 2, 4: 6 and 6: 7 (5) .
Kvitova in round two against Kerber
Two former Madrid winners, however, fared better: Defending champion Kiki Bertens celebrated her first win of the season against the only 15-year-old Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva with a 6: 4 and 6: 0, Petra Kvitova benefited in the second set from a task by her compatriot Marie Bouzkova. The three-time winner in the Caja Magica now meets Kerber.
Bouzkova shouldn't be the only player hit by injury on Thursday, however: local hero Garbine Muguruza had to retire due to a hamstring injury. Her substitute Danka Kovinic had no chance against Sloane Stephens in the 4-6 and 1-6 defeat.
