The most interesting match of the entire tennis week may have happened at the WTA Tour 250 tournament in Merida. And in the quarterfinals. Camila Giorgi and Sloane Stephens faced each other. However, not for very long. Because Giorgi shot the 2017 US Open winner 6-0 and 6-0.
On the one hand, this is surprising from a purely statistical point of view. On the other hand, Stephens is known to be one of those players who don't particularly vehemently defend themselves against defeats on days when they don't feel themselves. Nevertheless: You have to serve two donuts first. Which also shows the playful possibilities Camila Giorgi has at her disposal.
Giorgi is not interested in tennis
But she rarely shows it. Or, the other way round: All too often, Giorgi shoots himself out of a tournament. In that way she resembles a compatriot of Sloane Stephens, namely Madison Keys. But, well: In Merida, 31-year-old Giorgi, who says she has no interest in tennis (other than her own matches), appears to be on course for her fourth tournament win.
Because after the success against Stephens, Giorgi followed up against Katerina Siniakova and after the 7: 5, 7: 6 (2) played in the final against Rebecca Peterson. The Swede made it through qualifying to the final singles match of the event in Merida.
