The 26-year-old Belgian beat Alizé Cornet 6-2, 6-0 in the final, crowning her strong week at the tournament in Tunisia.
After a tight initial phase, Mertens pulled away from the 3:2 and did not allow the French to play anymore.
Mertens thus celebrated the first tournament victory this year in singles. And will also rise a little in the WTA ranking - in 2018 she was already number 12 in the world.
Ons Jabeur was actually the big favorite in Monastir. However, the local hero and world No. 2 had already lost to Claire Liu in the quarterfinals; this in turn lost in the semifinals against Mertens.
