In the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament, Giorgi beat Coco Gauff, who was seeded 15, 6: 4, 7: 6 (2) and once again proved her great form. She had previously won Elise Mertens and Petra Kvitova from the tournament.
"I think it was a great match. I was very consistent, it was a great level, I think," said the (often too) hard-hitting Italian afterwards. A secret to her strong demeanor? Probably that for the first time she was playing again for a longer period of time without interruption, Giorgi suspected. Otherwise she would have brought along physical problems again and again. "Now I'm finally playing my game."
Pegula turns the match against Jabeur
In the semifinals, Giorgi meets Jessica Pegula, who also surprisingly won against Ons Jabeur - with the somewhat strange result 1: 6, 7: 6 (4), 6: 0. Jabeur had already served to win the match in the second round. "I had the momentum [at the end] and oozed it in the third set."
In the previous round, Pegula had also stopped Danielle Collins' successful run.
Victoria Azarenka and Karolina Pliskova had previously reached the semi-finals in Montreal.
