After almost three hours of play, Collins won 2: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 4 against the former world number one who made her comeback in Canada. Halep had not played since May due to a calf injury and had missed the French Open and - as the defending champion - Wimbledon.

It was a tough fight in the end, Halep was already two times in front with a break in the decisive set, but Collins did not give up. Even if she was exhausted after her exhausting last weeks with tournament victories in Palermo and San Jose and also overextended her knee twice. "To be honest, I feel like I've been lucky," said Collins after her win. "I had to struggle with physical problems today after having played a lot of matches in the past few weeks, it wasn't easy." Collins now meets Jessica Pegula, who won against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova with 1: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2.

Halep wasn’t too unhappy, but “very positive about the way I played today,” she said. That was also a bit unexpected, "and then playing three hours at a high level, which has recently won a lot ..." She actually only expected this level at the US Open (from August 30th), Halep confessed.

Sabalenka turns game against Stephens

Also on to Ons Jabeur after a 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 victory over Daria Kasatkina.

At the beginning of the day in Montreal, Rebecca Marino continued her run with a victory over Paula Badosa. Aryna Sabalenka also made it through after a 4-1 deficit in the third set against Sloane Stephens. Marino and Sabalenka now meet.

There are also Karolina Pliskova (4: 6, 6: 3, 7: 6 (2) against Donna Vekic), Johanna Konta (3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2 against Elina Svitolina) and Coria Gauff (after giving up Anastasia Potapova).
