Strong week for Barbora Krejcikova: The Czech celebrated a surprising final victory over Iga Swiatek on home soil at the WTA 500 event in Ostrava and crowned a convincing performance with career title number five. Krejcikova had already triumphed at the WTA 250 event in Tallinn last week. It's the tenth win (including a walkover against Belinda Bencic) in a row for Krejcikova.
However, the world number one Swiatek had the better start to the final: The Pole, who was able to celebrate two Grand Slam titles this year, secured a hard-fought opening set thanks to a late break with 7: 5. The second section was also balanced, Swiatek served after a break deficit, Krejcikova withstood the pressure to serve twice against the loss of the match - and played his way into a tie-break.
Krejcikova strong nerves
In this, the Czech finally managed to turn things around. The world rankings-23. shows itself to be more gripping in the short decision and managed to equalize the set 7:6 (4). At this point, more than two hours and 15 minutes had already been played. A battle of attrition, then, in which Krejcikova seemed to have a little more grit.
The 26-year-old should make the first break in this set at 4: 3 to zero - and thus make the decision. Although Swiatek fought against the defeat and still had a chance for the rebreak, after three hours and 16 minutes Krejcikova made the three-set success perfect with her sixth match point. It is the second title in a row for the Czech - and the fifth overall in the career of the world number 23.
