One cannot and does not want to blame Jessica Pegula and Cori Gauff. But it could also have been understood if the two Americans had just let things slide in their round of 16 match in Rome against Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Alexandra Panova. Because in the second set it looked difficult that the doubles seeded in first position would say goodbye. Just like Gauff and Pegula had done individually.
But no. The competitive spirit of the two then prevailed. And now Cori Gauff and Jessica Pegula, as the saying goes, are also up in the Foro Italico. Because the week is still long, the next task in the quarter-finals is still a long time coming. On the other hand: there are certainly worse places than the Eternal City to while away the time. And there will be no lack of competent training partners for Gauff and Pegula.
Gauff loses to Bouzkova in Rome
But maybe in self-confidence for Roland Garros. Which is especially true for Cori Gauff. They're having a rather average season. And has a final to defend in Paris. In view of the previous performances on European sand, this is rather difficult to imagine. In Rome the end came early again, against Marie Bouzkova Gauff lost 6: 4, 2: 6 and 2: 6. Previously in Madrid, the still only 19-year-old hadn't had a chance against Paula Badosa, in Stuttgart it was the end of the second appearance against Anastasia Potapova.
On the other hand, the fact that Cori Gauff is currently number five in the world in singles and number four in doubles speaks for her great potential. But, as Chris Evert explained in detail in a press conference for Eurosport: After her brilliant entry into the tennis scene with the success against Venus Williams in Wimbledon in 2019, one might have thought that Gauff had already won a Grand Slam tournament . She seems to be a little further away from that at the moment.
In singles. Anything is possible in doubles with Jessica Pegula. Also a triumph in Rome. And in a few weeks in Roland Garros.
