Sorribes Tormo (WTA No. 51) defeated the local hero Giorgi (WTA No. 83) 7: 6 (4), 6: 7 (7) and 7: 5 and thus moved into the second round of the WTA 1000 Tournament a. Sorribes Tormo turned a 4-0 deficit in the third set to victory.
The longest match of the year so far was a game in Melbourne between Irina Camelia Begu and Johanna Konta with 3 hours and 33 minutes.
Overall, it was the sixth longest match at WTA level in the Open era. The longest is still the game between Vicki Nelson-Dunbar and Jean Hepner with 6 hours and 31 minutes from 1984 , which became famous primarily for a rally that lasted 29 (!) Minutes (643 strokes!).
Sorribes Tormo were a long way from this, especially since Giorgi is known for the rather merciless club. Against the Sorribes Tormo, which was more geared towards safety, there was a very opposing duel, but not always at the highest level: In the end, Sorribes Tormo had just 20 winners with 43 mistakes without need, with Giorgi at least 59 wins with 86 unforced mistakes .. .
Papa Giorgi is angry - the referee calls for reinforcements
Sergio Giorgi, the - well ... somewhat unpredictable father of Camila Giorgi, caused a stir. Who sat not far from the referee and made sure that she called for "reinforcement".
"If it were possible for you to stay around ... because Giorgi's father is really pissed off and I would like someone [here]," she said into her radio.
However, there does not seem to have been any further annoyance. Even if Sergio was understandably less than happy after the game.
