Maybe Iga Swiatek was warned: On Thursday, numbers two and three from the tableau of the WTA Tour 1000 tournament in Rome, Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula, said goodbye. The tournament favorite and defending champion did not want to suffer this fate. And so Swiatek started their attack on a second championship in Foro Italico with a merciless 6:0 and 6:0 against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Swiatek's next opponent will be either Bernarada Pera from the USA or Lesia Tsurenko from Ukraine.
Maria Sakkari is also on without any problems. The Greek, seeded ninth in Rome, won 6-3 and 6-1 against returnee Barbora Strycova. Speaking of which: Liudmilla Samsonova did not give Anett Kontaveit much light in her continued comeback efforts: Samsonova won 6: 3 and 6: 3.
