This is how you hit back as the world number one: A week after Iga Swiatek had lost an epic final against Barbora Krejcikova in Ostrava in three sets, she now caught up in San Diego with a 6: 3, 3: 6 and 6: 0 Donna Vekic her eighth title of the season. And thus expanded their already dominant position in the WTA world rankings even further.
But the week in southern California also provided a lot of good things for Vekic: The Croatian had made it into the main draw through qualification, had to make up for a 2-4 deficit in the semifinals against Danielle Collins on Sunday before beating Swiatek two in the final Sets of strong tennis showed.
Swiatek is now taking a little break, will not take part in the WTA Tour 1000 tournament in Guadalajara, but will end her season at the WTA Finals in Fort Wrth. Maybe she'll stay in San Diego for a few more days - and use the surfboard she received as an additional prize for winning the tournament.
