Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has lost the first match after her triumph at the All England Club. The 23-year-old Kazakh lost on Monday (local time) at the WTA tournament in San Jose to number seven seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina in the first round 6: 1, 2: 6, 0: 6.
In the round of 16, Kasatkina meets the American Taylor Townsend, who defeated the Australian Storm Sanders in the $757,900 (737,000 euro) hard court tournament in preparation for the US Open (from August 28). A German or Austrian player is not at the start in California.
Strong debut for Mandlik
Born in Russia, Rybakina caused a surprise in July with her victory at Wimbledon. It was the first Grand Slam triumph in the career of the current number 23 in the world.
Elizabeth Mandlik made a great debut on the WTA tour: the American and daughter of the former Czech world-class player Hana Mandlikova, after qualifying, beat her compatriot Alison Riske-Amritaj twice in round one 6-3 and challenged in the round of 16 the Spaniard Paula Badosa out.
