Extremely tight box for Paula Badosa at the WTA Tour 500 tournament in San Jose: The fourth seeded Spaniard had to go the full distance against the American qualifier Elizabeth Mandlik and only won after 2:31 hours with 6: 2, 5:7, 7:6 (5) through. The Iberian, second seeded in California, now meets either Japan's Naomi Osaka or Coco Gauff from the USA in the quarterfinals. Mandlik is the daughter of former world-class player Hana Mandlikova.
This year's Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur is also in the last eight. The third-ranked Tunisian defeated local hero Madison Keys 7:5, 6:1 and will face Russian Veronika Kudermetova or Claire Liu (USA) on Friday's quarter-finals.
At the parallel WTA Tour 250 event in Washington, however, the top seeded local hero Jessica Pegula was eliminated in the round of 16. The current number seven in the WTA rankings was beaten by Australia's Daria Saville 5:7, 4:6. The lady from "down under" now plays against the Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino, who previously defeated the German Andrea Petkovic in three sets.
