The round of 16 pleasure for the German Andrea Petkovic in St. Petersburg lasted just 58 minutes. The 34-year-old never really had anything to oppose against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko and had to give up with a 1: 6 and 2: 6 pack. Ostapenko now faces Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the quarterfinals, who should have the upper hand against Jaqueline Cristian.
Petra Kvitova was surprisingly eliminated. The Czech, seeded number six, ran into a debacle against Irina-Camelia Begu in the second set and finally had to say goodbye to the tournament with 4: 6 and 0: 6. The Romanian Begu now meets Tereza Martincova from the Czech Republic.
Rybakina gives where
In the round of 16, Martincova benefited from the non-appearance of Elena Rybakina (illness), who had started the tournament in St. Petersburg with third seed. Possible semi-final opponents for Martincova and Begu are the top seeded Greek Maria Sakkari or Elise Mertens.
In the lower half of the tableau, Anett Kontaveit - the Estonian is seeded second - and the 2021 Olympic champion, Belinda Bencic, will also meet in the quarterfinals.
