Simona Halep is back big: The Romanian won the title at the WTA Tour 1000 event in Toronto. In a final that lasted 2:16 hours, the ex-world number one defeated the up-and-coming Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 6:3, 2:6, 6:3. Halep had clinched the title at the 250cc event in Melbourne earlier in the year. The 30-year-old's last success at a higher level tournament came in September 2020 at the clay court tournament in Rome, when she benefited from a submission by Czech Karolina Pliskova in the final.
