First of all: No, the race for world number one for women is not really exciting even after the Australian Open. Although Iga Swiatek was not able to confirm her strong condition Down Under, the Pole is still more than 4000 points ahead of her first pursuer in the world rankings. But she is now called Aryna Sabalenka: The Australian Open winner made up three places and pushed past Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula and Carolina Garcia to second place.
Coco Gauff is currently sixth, followed by Maria Sakkari, Daria Kasatkina and Belinda Bencic. Meanwhile, Melbourne finalist Elena Rybakina made up 15 places and is in the top 10. Jelena Ostapenko (+5 in 12th place), Victoria Azarenka (+8 in 16th place) and Karolina Pliskova (+11 in 20th place) also made significant progress. Surprise woman Magda Linette from Poland even made up 23 positions and is the new number 22 in the WTA charts.
Maria before Niemeier and Raducanu
The best German in the ranking is currently in position 63, the 35-year-old Tatjana Maria moved up eight places after a good Australian Open. Jule Niemeier is currently ranked 71st in the classification and is thus in similar areas to Emma Raducanu (current number 77) and Tamara Korpatsch in 78th place.
Julia Grabher was unable to win a game on her first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, but despite falling four places she is still comfortably within the top 100 for women. The Vorarlberger is the current number 89 in the world.
